iTunes surround sound output

If you’re anything like me you probably have too much time on your hands. I wanted to post this here because it took me a while to figure it out.

The problem: you want to hear music out of all your speakers, but until now you’ve only gotten channels 1/2 (stereo).

The solution: using Audio Hijack Pro, along with a command: sox. Grab sox from homebrew and fire up Audio Hijack Pro. Pick iTunes and add the effects “Pipe Dream” and “Gain”. Set the gain in/out to 0 (so the default output doesn’t get used) and then in pipedream use the following command:

<&0 /usr/local/bin/sox -c 2 -b 16 --rate 44100 --encoding signed -t raw - -t coreaudio "USB Sound Device"

Swap “USB Sound Device” with the name of whatever device you’re using, or use -d for the system default. I don’t think you need to fiddle with the settings, but this works perfect on my system.

Neglect

Sorry blog, I forgot about you. This is probably going to just “be here” for a while, without content, on The Internet, simply so my tumblr account has a placeholder.

Crashed On Quit Again
The fun part about this is that it makes my life so much harder. More CS4 crash reports.

Just an hour and forty-five minutes until I get to go throw my chair through a window again.

How did I miss this post? I’m glad I went back and found it.
